Leaves and seeds of various herbs, roots and barks are found to possess medicinal properties. The Egyptians use myrrh, cumin, peppermint, caraway, fennel and clove oil for various ailments. Some natural herbs may be harmless but others are potentially toxic.
Herbs maybe effective for some problems but dangerous when taken in the wrong dose or by people with certain medical conditions.
Distinct risk is that a herbal product may be mislabeled, adulterated with prescription drugs or contaminants. Herbal products should be used with great caution and only in consultation with a physician. Pregnant and nursing women, anyone with a chronic disease, and children under 2 years of age, especially should not take herbal supplements unless their physicians consent.
